Review: Wilson Clubs |
Last Spring I needed new clubs. However, the purchasing decision posed a dilemma.
It is always best to buy quality, but I didn't know much about clubs. Plus I was just
starting out. I didn't want to fork over $1000 for clubs until I felt I could play decently.
I searched for starter club sets. The approximate cost for a new starter set was about
$200 - $300. My previous set was from Wilson, and they lasted well. So I wanted to
try another Wilson set.
I purchased a set of Wilson ProStaff Tour Graphite clubs at Wal Mart, which
were on sale for $190. The set contained 3 woods (1,3,5) and 8 irons (3-PW). The heads are oversize, and the
shafts are graphite with standard flex.
I have been using the set regularly for about six months, and I'm pleased with the results.
The head on the 5 iron did fall off at the range. But that was after I had hit an estimated 300-400
shots with the 5 iron on range mats which are on concrete. I don't expect any
irons to last long at the range. Thus I wasn't too surprised or disappointed.
The woods have held up well at the range. The 3 wood has been especially durable. I
have hit 700-800 shots off of range mats and it is still in one piece.
As for quality, I have been very satisfied. I can reach 250 with my driver and 220 with the
3 wood. The set has been excellent for my purpose, which is starting out. I'm working
on building my swing, and my bad shots aren't the fault of the clubs.
I therefore recommend this set as a starter set or even a travel set. Of course more expensive
sets have better quality, but again, they are more expensive.
If you are just starting golf, or starting again, I suggest you follow my plan: Buy a Wilson
starter set and use them until you improve to the point where you can make the most
of a better set.
