Singles, Dating Web Sites

The internet is a great place to meet others. I have subscribed to several singles sites, and I have been pleased with the results. I heartily encourage singles to take advantage of the internet to find that significant other.

Security is a legitimate concern. I'm sure that there are nefarious characters lurking on some sites. I don't know of a web site that does criminal background checks on subscribers, and I wouldn't want to pay for one that does. I don't think security is an issue if you use some basic common sense.

I have spoken to one woman who claimed that she was scammed by a man that she met through a singles web site. But the problem wasn't the web site; she was a victim of her own lack of any common sense. Here is a hint: be suspicious of anyone you meet who is asking for money. In fact, just be careful and reasonably suspicious of anyone you meet, and you will not have a problem.

This site provides all the requisite tools a single needs to search and evaluate other singles. Users set up individual profiles to offer pictures and answers to reasonably significant questions that can be searched and evaluated by other users.

The search tool utilizes a wide variety of search criteria that ranges from income and occupation to hair color. Once a profile is found, users can send messages, then check to see when or if their messages have been read. The web site software keeps a useful history of messages that have been sent and received. Users can send quick messages to someone else who is online as well as block messages from other users.

Thus I rate this site as excellent in that all the basic tools are there. I don't know the count of subscribers, but there appear to be enough for this to be a valuable service. I have had good results, and I recommend it.

This site is different in that the user doesn't search for singles. Instead, matches with other singles are sent to the user based on the results of a personality profile, which the user fills out online by answering numerous questions.

Obviously, the value of the matches depends on the value of the personality profile. The site promotes that the personality profile reveals 29 dimensions of compatibility, and extols the value of using these dimensions of compatibility in creating close matches.

However, my experience is that the personality profile is virtually worthless. I have been sent many matches that are not even remotely close to my personality. For example, one match said that she was "not much of a reader", which is not close to my personality. Several other matches were opposed to hunters, which I am one. I'm convinced that matches are created based on not much more than age and geography.

Further, you can read the results of your personality profile. I have read mine, and I don't know what to make of it. It contains platitudes that don't reveal anything remotely illuminating, and some are blatantly suspect. I'm absolutely convinced that the personality profile as generated on this site is not useful at best, and borderline fraud at worst.

Nevertheless, the uselessness of the personality profile doesn't mean that the site is still not useful. Searching for singles is a numbers game, and if the superficial gimmick of a personality profile, attracts numbers, the site can still be useful. I have used this service for over a year during which I have met some excellent matches.

In addition, the web site offers useful software features. Users and their matches are led through a series of steps that involve exchanging answers to short and long answers and a list of "must haves" and "can't stands". These steps are a moderately enjoyable way to begin to get to know someone.

The site is thirty dollars a month, which is somewhat pricey. Again, the site is banking on the appeal of the personality profile. I believe that you can find good quality matches on the site, and you will have to judge whether or not you are getting your money's worth. But don't join the service expecting anything especially useful from the personality profile.
